The Laigh Kirk, KILMARNOCK
The scheme received a major Civic Trust ward in 1997 in conjunction with Ian Munroe Architects of Kilmarnock
Scottish Enterprise Ayrshire and the Local Authority entered into partnership to promote and up grade the centre of Kilmarnock.
The aim of the project was to revitalise the town Centre and restore Kilmarnock as a regional shopping centre for the area. Ambitious streetscape proposals were put together which now serve as a benchmark to many other town developments and to complement the scheme, Martin Berkley was given the remit to restore the area to the historic centre of Kilmarnock. The works involved a great deal of research to restore the stone retaining walls and railings to the old Kirk yard.
A scheme involving preparing a disabled access ramp, metalwork, lighting, soft landscaping and a system of pathways was developed to open up the old covenantors grave yard. Under lighters to the mature trees give the whole area an ‘atmospheric’ effect at night.
