Countess Street, SALTCOATS
Refurbish all surfaces and street furniture. Work in conjunction with a floodlighting scheme to the Town Hall. Provide an inviting approach to the Street from the Station and existing pedestrianised scheme at Dockhead Street. Increase trading potential by making the Street more pedestrian friendly by defining pedestrian priority and ‘calming’ the traffic flow.
The existing Street was poorly surfaced and presented a run down image. Existing raised planters were not a success and badly vandalised. Inadequate drainage allowed some shops to flood in heavy rain. The design was simplistic in approach. Foot paths were constructed of small modular paving and flexible surfacing to accommodate surface covers and provide a contrast to the vehicle surface. Conservation kerb and sett defined the edge of the foot path and in the narrow section of the street both surfaces were at grade. Bespoke bollards and columns were designed to fit into the dimensions of the kerb to minimise cutting and soft planting was reduced to columns carrying hanging baskets within a simplified seating area. Some existing trees were removed to provide an open setting for the Town Hall.
